Long before it was dubbed Mazatlan, those who knew the area called it "the islands of Mazatlan" since all the hills around downtown Mazatlan were surrounded by marshland giving the impression that it was a group of islands...

We are a group of friends that live in Old Mazatlan that enjoy walking and hiking. Join us for some exercise and discover a side to Mazatlan not offered by the commercial tour groups.
Starting at Casa Etnika, a small craft store and cafe located close to the Machado Square, we will walk through the oldest part of the historical district heading towards the former Maritime Customs House. Next, we will pass through a small alley neighborhood and climb the stairs leading to the top of Cerro de la Cruz (Cross Hill). We will walk around the hill to Cerro del Mirador (look out hill) where many battles were fought against the French in the XIX century.
Depending on the group, we may take a path through the bush, the stairs, or the paved road back down to the street that takes you to the lighthouse. The lighthouse is the southern most point of Mazatlan and is the second tallest natural lighthouse in the world, next to the lighthouse on top of the Rock of Gibraltar.
It takes about 30 minutes to walk the 143 meters (470 feet) to the top. The first half of the walk is a dirt path and second half consists of cement stairs zigzagging to the top. Once at the top, you'll enjoy a spectacular 360ยบ view of Mazatlan.
The way down the lighthouse is very easy. We will return along the ocean and pass the cliffs on Cerro del Mirador where you can take in the beautiful sunset. Finally, we will descend upon Olas Altas beach, pass the Museum of Art and Archeology to head to the Machado Square where we will finish the journey.
